Spin–Orbit Misalignment in Close Binaries with Two Compact Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
Spin–orbit misalignment in coalescing compact binaries affects their gravitational radiation waveforms. When the misalignment angles are large (∼> 30 ◦), the detection efficiency of the coalescence events can decrease significantly if the misalignment effects are not modeled. In this paper, we consider the formation of close compact binaries and calculate the expected misalignment angles after the second core collapse event. Depending on the progenitor parameters and the assumptions made about supernova kicks, we find that 30%–80% of binaries containing a black hole and a neutron star that coalesce within 1010 yr have misalignment angles larger than 30◦ and a significant fraction of them could remain undetected. The calculations also allow us to place strong constraints on the progenitors of such binaries and the kick magnitudes required for their formation. We also discuss the spin tilt angles of close binaries with two black holes. Subject headings: binaries: close — stars: supernovae — gravitation

Dynamics of Stellar Spin Driven by Planets Undergoing Lidov-Kozai Migration: Paths to Spin-Orbit Misalignment
Many exoplanetary systems containing hot Jupiters (HJs) exhibit significant misalignment between the spin axes of the host stars and the orbital angular momentum axes of the planets (“spin-orbit misalignment”). High-eccentricity migration involving LidovKozai oscillations of the planet’s orbit induced by a distant perturber is a possible channel for producing such misaligned HJ systems. Previou...
متن کاملEccentricity and spin-orbit misalignment in short-period stellar binaries as a signpost of hidden tertiary companions
Eclipsing binaries are observed to have a range of eccentricities and spin-orbit misalignments (stellar obliquities). Whether such properties are primordial or arise from post-formation dynamical interactions remains uncertain. This paper considers the scenario inwhich the binary is the inner component of a hierarchical triple stellar system, and derives the requirements that the tertiary compa...
متن کاملThe Banana Project. Iv. Two Aligned Stellar Rotation Axes in the Young Eccentric Binary System Epcrucis: Primordial Orientation and Tidal Alignment
With observations of the EPCru system, we continue our series of measurements of spin-orbit angles in eclipsing binary star systems, the BANANA project (Binaries Are Not Always Neatly Aligned). We find a close alignment between the sky projections of the rotational and orbital angular momentum vectors for both stars (βp = −1.8± 1.6◦ and |βs| < 17◦). We also derive precise absolute dimensions an...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملEarly Excitation of Spin-orbit Misalignments in Close-in Planetary Systems
Continued observational characterization of transiting planets that reside in close proximity to their host stars has shown that a substantial fraction of such objects posses orbits that are inclined with respect to the spin axes of their stars. Mounting evidence for the wide-spread nature of this phenomenon has challenged the conventional notion that large-scale orbital transport occurs during...
